PROGRAM OBJECTIVE:
The LVN program is designed to provide the student with the basic knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of a Licensed Vocational Nurse (DOT code: 079.347-014) in a health care environment. The program is approved by the BVNPT as an accredited program, the completion of which meets the minimum requirements set forth as necessary for application to take the Vocational Nurse License examination. The program is presented in a 1/4 credit hour, standard term format consisting of four consecutive quarters. The program presents instruction in: anatomy & physiology, nutrition, psychology, normal growth and development, nursing fundamentals, nursing process, communication, patient education, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, communicable diseases, gerontological nursing, rehabilitation nursing, pediatric nursing, leadership and supervision.

The student will understand the basic principals of Orem's Self-Care Model for Nursing, basic fundamentals in nursing skills and concepts of patient care, as well as Anatomy & Physiology, Nutrition and Pharmacology related to the nursing profession.

The student will develop the theoretical and clinical experience required to perform nursing functions in the fields of Medical Surgical Nursing, Obstetrical, Pediatric, Home Health, Emergency Room and Hospice Care. The student will also be provided with anatomy & physiology of each body system as well as knowledge of common disorders, diagnostic tests, medical management, pathophysiology, nutritional, pharmaceutical and psychosocial needs of patients.

The student will develop the theoretical and clinical knowledge surrounding the role of a nurse in the natural process of death and dying including the concept of long term and hospice care. The vocational development portion of the program will provide the student with team leading and management skills and the roles and responsibilities of the vocational nurse as a member of the entire health care team.
