
Program Objective:
The Medical Assistant - Administrative & Clinical program is designed to give students the basic knowledge and skills necessary to work as an entry-level Medical Assistant in a health care setting.Emphasis is placed on both front office administrative skills as well as back office clinical skills.The administrative portion of the Medical Assistant - Administrative & Clinical program emphasizes the "front office" skills required in a health care setting, while the Clinical portion of the course is designed to prepare the student to work in a clinical environment in a hospital, doctor's office or medical clinic and includes a 160 hour, 4-week externship.

Introduction to Medical Assisting
Course Length: 3 Weeks

This course includes instruction in the history of medicine, health care team members and their area of specialization. Students will be introduced to the role and functions of a medical assistant. In addition, students will be introduced to medical law and ethics, patient rights, and medical records procedures. Additionally the course will introduce the roles of the three types of word parts in forming medical terms, define the commonly used prefixes, word roots and suffixes. Also students will study medical terminology of body planes, directions and cavities as well as terms related to cells, tissue and glands, and genetics.
The course will also teach students to identify the major functions and structures of the Skeletal system, describe the three types of joints, identify the medical specialists who treat disorders of the skeletal system, and understand terminology related to the pathology and diagnostic and treatment procedures of the skeletal system.
Written Communications

This course includes instruction in the basic skills to develop written communications in a medical environment as well as basic 10-key operations. Students will learn the functions of basic administrative equipment found in a medical practice (calculator, copy machine, transcriber, word processor, computerc.etc.). Student will also learn the responsibilities of the medical receptionist in running a medical office. Students will be able to describe the basic patterns of communication, understand nonverbal communication and problem-solving steps. Students will also understand the importance of mental and emotional status in regard to overall health and the commonly used defense mechanisms. The course will also teach students the major functions, structures and terminology related to diagnostic and treatment procedures of the Muscular, Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Systems.
Accounting Procedures

This course provides the basic skills necessary to perform medical office bookkeeping, single and double entry and one-write system (Pegboard). The course also includes instruction in handling referrals, methods of scheduling appointments, correspondence, classifications of mail and proper handling of medical office internal and external records. Students will be introduced to patient charting techniques and patient data collection. Also they will be able to explain the basic filing methods and the steps used in filing medical records. The course will also teach students the major functions and structures and terminology related to diagnostic and treatment procedures of the Respiratory, Digestive and Urinary Systems.
Medical Billing
Course Length: 3 Weeks

This course includes instruction in the basic skills necessary to perform entry-level hospital and physician billing. Students will learn to define terms used in health insurance, the concepts surrounding managed care and distinguish the major classes and types of health insurance organizations and plans including government sponsored plans. The course also introduces medical coding (ICD-9, E-codes, V-codes and CPT-4), coding rules and the HCFA-1500 and UB-92 forms. Students will also learn basic banking terms and procedures and how to keep track of equipment maintenance and maintain an inventory of clinical and administrative supplies.
Computer Operations (Windows) / Microsoft Word

This course includes instruction in the basic skills necessary to perform entry-level word processing functions on Microsoft Word/ computer. The students will be able to identify the components of a computer, system software, and application software. The course will also provide instruction in basic operating software (Windows) and GUI. Working in MS Word, students will learn to manipulate the menu bar, toolbars, rulers and status bar; enter, change and format a document using editing features; check spelling and correct errors; save, enter text into an existing document, preview documents and print. The course will also teach students the major functions, structures and terminology related to diagnostic and treatment procedures of the Endocrine and Reproductive Systems.
Medisoft for Windows
Course Length: 3 Weeks

This course includes instruction in the basic skills necessary to use the MediSoft for Windows software. The students will be able to define the terms used in each chapter, learn how to add a new patient account, enter and edit the information needed for a new patient case record. Instruction includes how to process transactions with patient's Superbill information, enter procedure charge transactions, record payments received from patients and insurance carriers, enter an adjustment and print a walkout receipt. Also, students will learn to print various list reports, design a custom report and print Patient Statements. Students will work with the claim management process screen to create and edit and delete claims. Student will also learn to print HCFA-1500 claim forms and Primary Insurance Aging reports. The course will also teach students the major functions, structures, and terminology related to diagnostic and treatment procedures of the Integumentary, Nervous and Special Senses including the Eyes and Ears systems.
Anatomy & CPR
Course Length: 3 Weeks

This course includes instruction in basic understanding of human anatomy. Specific systems will be discussed and reviewed including the Respiratory, Musculoskeletal and Male reproductive systems. Anatomical structures and components, along with the functions, diseases, disorders diagnostic tests and common treatments associated with each system will also be reviewed. The course also reviews basic vital signs, injection techniques and blood collection procedures. This course also provides instruction and American Heart Association certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic Life Support. Students will learn the origin of CPR, steps involved in the Healthcare Provider level of training and management of foreign body airway obstruction. Included with this training is Automated External Defibrillation (AED). Students completing this course will receive a Healthcare Provider Level, BLS CPR/AED card from the American Heart Association.
Phlebotomy & Laboratory Procedures
Course Length: 3 Weeks

This course provides instruction in Phlebotomy, including injections and blood collection techniques in detail. Students will learn the various methods of injection and blood collection along with universal precautions, Aids, Hepatitis and other safety procedures. The course also provides instruction in physical xaminations, bandaging techniques, First Aid and Pediatric assisting. The anatomy and basic physiology of the Eye, Ear, Integumentary and Nervous systems will also be covered in this course along with the identification of common diseases, disorders, diagnostic testing and treatment procedures required.
EKG & UA Lab Procedures
Course Length: 3 Weeks

This course provides an introduction to Electrocardiogram and Urinalysis laboratory procedures and techniques. The course includes physical, chemical and microscopic analysis techniques along with common diagnostic testing procedures relating to the pathology of the Urinary system. Students will learn techniques involved in urine collection and storage and safety precautions. The course also provides instruction in basic laboratory procedures, safety, and handling of biohazardous waste products. Students will also practice injection techniques and blood collection along with universal precautions. The anatomy and basic physiology of the Urinary, Endocrine and Digestive systems will also be covered in this course along with the identification of common diseases, disorders, diagnostic testing and treatment procedures required.
Asepsis and Surgical Procedures
Course Length: 3 Weeks

This course will introduce the student to Aseptic Techniques, Sterilization and minor surgical procedures and protocols. Guidelines for maintaining asepsis in the medical office will be explored along with the causes and effects of microorganisms in a health environment. Students will also learn to utilize an Autoclave Sterilization unit, handling sterile instruments, sterile fields and surgical asepsis techniques. Minor office surgeries and the role of the medical assistant will be explored as well as sterile tray setup techniques. The anatomy and physiology of the Circulatory and reproductive systems will be discussed as well as a study of the process, causes and treatments of infectious diseases of the Intestinal track, Immune, Integumentary, and Circulatory systems.
Career Development
Course Length: 3 weeks

This course provides instruction in the art of getting a job. Students will be introduced to resume preparation, job search strategies, interview techniques, goal setting, dress for success and career development techniques. The course is designed to provide the student with successful strategies and techniques for finding employment opportunities and successfully negotiating the resume, interview and negotiation of employment processes. The course will also provide the student opportunities to do targeted outside job searches and interviews during the term of instruction.
Externship
Course Length: 4 Weeks
Credit Units: 8
This course will provide the student with an opportunity to use the skills acquired from classroom instruction in a "real life" medical setting. Students will be placed with medical facility as an extern where the staff will provide opportunities for practical application of the student's skills in a back-office clinical environment. The externship will be monitored by the Placement Department but the employer representative(s) will supervise the student on a day-to-day basis.
